    Effects of Soccer on Stock Markets: The Return-Volatility Relationship

Data from Chile, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom support propositions that soccer teams results in international cups affect stock market returns and the return-volatility relationship. Evidence from Spain and the UK, soccer powerhouses, suggests that losses are associated with lower returns and higher risk aversion but evidence from Chile and Turkey, where soccer is the most important sport but teams are not as successful, reveals that wins are associated with higher returns and lower risk aversion.     Modeling and forecasting car ownership based on socio-economic and demographic indicators in Turkey

    Since car ownership is an important determinant to analyze car travel behavior especially in developing countries, this paper deals with modeling and forecasting car ownership in Turkey based on socio-economic and demographic indicators such as Gross Domestic Product(GDP) per capita, Gasoline Price (GP), car price and number of employees by using multiple nonlinear regression analysis. Although most of the studies on this subject prefer using annual data, we use monthly data for the analysis of car ownership since all explanatory variables and exchange rates used for the modeling are unstable and vary even in a short period in developing countries such as Turkey. Thus, it may be possible to reflect the effects of socio-economic and demographic indicators on car ownership more properly. During the modeling process, exponential and polynomial nonlinear regression models are set up and then tested to investigate their applicability for car ownership forecasting. Based on results of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the polynomial models has been selected to forecast car ownership for the year 2035. In order to reveal the possible different trends of the independent variables in future, car ownership is forecasted along the scenarios which are related to the GDP per capita and GP. Results show that Turkey’s car ownership may vary between 230 and 325 per thousand capita in 2035 depending on economic achievements, global oil prices and national taxation policies. The lowest and the highest values of the car ownership may provide insight to car producers and transport planners in Turkey. Another significant result presented in this study is that car ownership rate will be substantially lower in Turkey than that in the European Union countries despite it has an increasing trend in the past two decades

The empirical evidence presented here suggests that Besikta's win against foreign rivals in the Winner's Cup increases stock market returns. The same effect is not present for the other two big teams (Fenerbahce and Galatasaray).     THE EFFECT OF SPORTS EDUCATION ON BODY IMAGE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENT ATHLETES

    In this study, it was aimed to determine whether the body image of the university student athletes changes according to gender, sports branch and sports education status. Body Perception Scale filled by a total of 540 people, 227 males and 313 females. T-test, one-way analysis of variance and LSD tests were used in statistical processes. A statistically significant difference was found between body Image scores of men and women according to gender (p < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between total body image scores according to Body Mass Index (p < 0.05). The scores of the groups with low and high body mass index were found to be higher than the groups with Body Mass Index between 20-25 kg/m2. Body image scores of university student athletes who did not receive sports training were found to be statistically higher than individual athletes and team athletes who received sports education (p < 0.001). In conclusion, in university student athletes, women are worse than men, and those whose body mass index is below normal and higher than normal are less satisfied with their bodies than normal ones. In addition, university students who take sports education have better body image scores. It can be said that sports education has a positive effect on body image score. It is recommended that university student athletes who do not have sports education should be given courses and seminars for sports education. Article visualizations

    Glycosaminoglycan mimetric peptide nanofibers promote mineralization by osteogenic cells

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Bone tissue regeneration is accomplished by concerted regulation of protein-based extracellular matrix components, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and inductive growth factors. GAGs constitute a significant portion of the extracellular matrix and have a significant impact on regulating cellular behavior, either directly or through encapsulation and presentation of growth factors to the cells. In this study we utilized a supramolecular peptide nanofiber system that can emulate both the nanofibrous architecture of collagenous extracellular matrix and the major chemical composition found on GAGs. GAGs and collagen mimetic peptide nanofibers were designed and synthesized with sulfonate and carboxylate groups on the peptide scaffold. The GAG mimetic peptide nanofibers interact with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), which is a critical growth factor for osteogenic activity. The GAG mimicking ability of the peptide nanofibers and their interaction with BMP-2 promoted osteogenic activity and mineralization by osteoblastic cells. Alkaline phosphatase activity, Alizarin red staining and energy dispersive X-ray analysis spectroscopy indicated the efficacy of the peptide nanofibers in inducing mineralization. The multifunctional and bioactive microenvironment presented here provides osteoblastic cells with osteogenic stimuli similar to those observed in native bone tissue

    Bone-Like Mineral Nucleating Peptide Nanofibers Induce Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells into Mature Osteoblasts

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.A bone implant should integrate to the tissue through a bone-like mineralized interface, which requires increased osteoblast activity at the implant-tissue boundary. Modification of the implant surface with synthetic bioinstructive cues facilitates on-site differentiation of progenitor stem cells to functional mature osteoblasts and results in subsequent mineralization. Inspired by the bioactive domains of the bone extracellular matrix proteins and the mussel adhesive proteins, we synthesized peptide nanofibers to promote bone-like mineralization on the implant surface. Nanofibers functionalized with osteoinductive collagen I derived Asp-Gly-Glu-Ala (DGEA) peptide sequence provide an advantage in initial adhesion, spreading, and early commitment to osteogenic differentiation for mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). In this study, we demonstrated that this early osteogenic commitment, however, does not necessarily guarantee a priority for maturation into functional osteoblasts. Similar to natural biological cascades, early commitment should be further supported with additional signals to provide a long-term effect on differentiation. Here, we showed that peptide nanofibers functionalized with Glu-Glu-Glu (EEE) sequence enhanced mineralization abilities due to osteoinductive properties for late-stage differentiation of hMSCs. Mussel-inspired functionalization not only enables robust immobilization on metal surfaces, but also improves bone-like mineralization under physiologically simulated conditions. The multifunctional osteoinductive peptide nanofiber biointerfaces presented here facilitate osseointegration for long-term clinical stability. © 2014 American Chemical Society

    The Risk Factors Associated with Grip Lock Injuries in Artistic Gymnasts: A Systematic Review

    Artistic gymnastics (AG) is a sport that demands grace, strength, and flexibility, leading to a broad spectrum of injuries. The dowel grip (DG) is widely used by gymnasts to securely hold onto the high bar or uneven bars. However, incorrect usage of the DG can result in grip lock (GL) injuries. This systematic review aims to (1) identify studies that have investigated the risk factors related to GL injuries among gymnasts and (2) synthesize the key evidence. A comprehensive electronic search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Elsevier, SportDiscus, and Google Scholar, covering the period from their inception until November 2022. The data extraction and analysis were independently completed by two investigators. A total of 90 relevant studies were initially identified, out of which seven clinical trials met the eligibility criteria. For the quantitative synthesis, five studies were included. The details extracted from each article include: the sample characteristics (number, gender, age, and health status), the study design, the instrumentation or intervention used, and the final results. Our results revealed that the underlying causes of the risk factors of GL injuries were the irregular checking of the dowel grip and the mating surface of the bar, the tearing of the dowel of the leather strap, and the use of the dowel grip in different competition apparatuses. In addition, GL injuries may occur either as severe forearm fractures or mild injuries. Excessive flexion of the forearm and overpronation of the wrist during rotational movements, such as the swing or backward/forward giant circle, may increase the possibility of GL injury on the high bar. Future studies should focus on GL injury prevention strategy and rehabilitation protocol for GL injuries.     Selective adhesion and growth of vascular endothelial cells on bioactive peptide nanofiber functionalized stainless steel surface

    Metal-based scaffolds such as stents are the most preferred treatment methods for coronary artery disease. However, impaired endothelialization on the luminal surface of the stents is a major limitation occasionally leading to catastrophic consequences in the long term. Coating the stent surface with relevant bioactive molecules is considered to aid in recovery of endothelium around the wound site. However, this strategy remains challenging due to restrictions in availability of proper bioactive signals that will selectively promote growth of endothelium and the lack of convenience for immobilization of such signaling molecules on the metal surface. In this study, we developed self-assembled peptide nanofibers that mimic the native endothelium extracellular matrix and that are securely immobilized on stainless steel surface through mussel-inspired adhesion mechanism. We synthesized Dopa-conjugated peptide amphiphile and REDV-conjugated peptide amphiphile that are self-assembled at physiological pH. We report that Dopa conjugation enabled nanofiber coating on stainless steel surface, which is the most widely used backbone of the current stents. REDV functionalization provided selective growth of endothelial cells on the stainless steel surface. Our results revealed that adhesion, spreading, viability and proliferation rate of vascular endothelial cells are remarkably enhanced on peptide nanofiber coated stainless steel surface compared to uncoated surface. On the other hand, although vascular smooth muscle cells exhibited comparable adhesion and spreading profile on peptide nanofibers, their viability and proliferation significantly decreased. Our design strategy for surface bio-functionalization created a favorable microenvironment to promote endothelial cell growth on stainless steel surface, thereby providing an efficient platform for bioactive stent development for long term treatment of cardiovascular diseases. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd
